Vaccines
Your newborn will need many vaccines in the first year of life (see below for schedule.) This painting portrays Edward Jenner administering the first smallpox vaccination in 1796! Before your child receives any immunizations,
you will have received a vaccine
information statement (VIS) describing
the
vaccine, both the benefits and risks, including possible side effects
and reactions to watch for. Our practice strongly encourages
the use of these vaccines--but of course when there are
contradindications, we
will inform you. All hospitals in New York including North Shore--Manhasset and Long Island Jewish--administer the first dose of hepatitis B vaccine to newborns in the nursery shortly after birth.
Due to a new federal

An
excellent source for further information
regarding childhood vaccines can be found in the Centers for Disease
Control's
"Parent's Guide to Childhood Immunization"Another excellent educational resource is the Parent's Guide to Vaccine-Preventable Disease. This pamphlet is published by Aventis Pasteur, but nevertheless is a very concise and worthwhile review of exactly what illnesses these immunizations have been so successful in preventing. If you have any unanswered questions, be sure to ask! Or if you'd like, you can drop a question here ahead of time. Regardless of religious affiliation, this paper entitled Compulsory Immunization in Jewish Day Schools (.pdf version click here) puts the risks vs. benefits of immunization into a crystal clear perspective--historically, scientificly, (and religiously if you are Jewish.)
Immunizing your child is IMPORTANT. The efficacy of vaccines is dependent on the widespread use of these vaccines as none of these are 100% effective. If more and more people go without vaccination, the incidence of these preventable diseases will increase. Please take a look at the CBS News 60 Minutes story, Saying 'No' To Immunization. While everything in life is fraught with risk and nothing we do is exclusively beneficial, the incredible improvements in child health and life expectancy are due in large part to vaccines. To help put "risk" into some perspective, take a look at this website from Harvard University.
